Footbridge and busy A282
As seen from the Traffic Control Office near the Dartford Tunnel.
The footbridge is used by toll booth operators, on both Tunnel and Bridge toll booths.

Crossing Control Offices, M25
This office is controlled by Highways Agency officers who inspect heavy weight lorries before they enter the Dartford Tunnel.
Cyclists heading to Essex can also wait here for a passing Highways Agency car to be taken across the Tunnel (or reversely across the bridge).
In the background is the rush hour traffic on the A282 (the only road section of the M25).

Dartford Crossing Tolls
This is the most easterly point where traffic can cross the Thames and it is a link between the North and South sections of the M25. The capacity of the Dartford Crossing was increased substantially when the bridge was completed in 1991. But these Toll Gates are still a bottleneck. At peak times, the queues can be several miles long. The pole in the foreground is for a camera. Spare a thought for the people who staff these tolls - can you imagine the unsocial hours, the monotony and the working conditions?

Dartford: toll plaza queues
Looking down from stationary traffic on the A282 Dartford crossing - southbound traffic such as us takes the bridge while northbound vehicles use the tunnel.
The two toll plazas can be seen here - the northbound one in the foreground with the southbound one just beyond; trails of headlights and brakelights are more or less inevitable on a Friday teatime.
Although the majority of the London Orbital road is the M25, it is the A282 for the mile or so each side of the Dartford Crossing. Otherwise, the crossing would be of no use to vehicles that are prohibited from motorways - and the alternative route is a long detour!
The whole view is through a series of electricity cables strung from the many pylon lines in this area.

View across southern approach to Dartford River Crossing
The nearest dual carriageway is not connected to the river crossings; the traffic descending the ramp is exiting the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge southbound and the far traffic under the gantries is queuing to enter the Dartford Tunnels northbound.
