This is the most easterly point where traffic can cross the Thames and it is a link between the North and South sections of the M25. The capacity of the Dartford Crossing was increased substantially when the bridge was completed in 1991. But these Toll Gates are still a bottleneck. At peak times, the queues can be several miles long. The pole in the foreground is for a camera. Spare a thought for the people who staff these tolls - can you imagine the unsocial hours, the monotony and the working conditions?
