Stoneleigh Old Almshouses
This venerable row of almshouses is dated 1594 and was provided by Sir Thomas and Lady Alice Leigh for housing the poor. Each resident received one shilling a week but had to attend church on Saturdays, Sundays and holy days as well as a quarterly sermon preached by the local vicar. Originally each house had one room upstairs and one downstairs room with a shared garden at the rear; in more recent times extensions have been added and modern facilities incorporated but the basic units remain the same. They are grade II listed.
