Demolition of John Ruskin School, Shirley, Croydon
The school was demolished to make way for high-quality housing. The much older windmill nearby was retained as a 'feature'. One of the new roads was laughably named 'Post Mill Close', although the windmill was not a post mill at all.

Demolition of John Ruskin School, Upper Shirley Road, Croydon
These school buildings had a very short life. Newly opened in 1954, they then housed a boys' grammar school. This eventually became co-educational and then part of a sixth form college. But the Council decided it could make more money by tearing down the less than fifty year old buildings and selling the land for housing, so in 1993 they were demolished, as seen here.

Thirty years ahead of its time?
With the wave of interest in electrically-propelled private cars, people tend to forget that these have been around for a very long time - some say longer than the internal combustion-engined car. This picture, taken as long ago as 1977, shows an electric car being demonstrated to an interested group of female students, some of whom later were able to drive it for a short distance.
