London Tramlink Stadler tram no. 2554 approaching Therapia Lane tram stop, Croydon
This was the first of the six Stadler Variotram vehicles delivered to the system in 2012 to cope with the over-crowding and to operate a new route 4 from the Therapia Lane stop to Elmers End. The garish livery is confined to this one vehicle and is a special advertisement for Croydon in recognition of the local Council having part funded the new Stadler trams. Image

A tram leaves Therapia Lane Tramlink Stop
The Wimbledon to West Croydon Line was opened in 1855 and closed in 1997 so that the route could be taken over by Tramlink. The original line between Wimbledon and West Croydon just ran as a shuttle between those two stations and although it was electrified in 1930, trains on the line never continued elsewhere. In its latter years trains ran about every 45 minutes. Some sections were single line and this continued when Tramlink took over the route. Therapia Lane is a completely new stop that did not exist on the old Wimbledon to West Croydon Line. The depot for Tramlink is at Therapia Lane, just behind. A tram bound for New Addington is just leaving.

Coupled cars at Therapia Lane
Cars are not operated coupled together on Croydon's tramway, but coupling had to be resorted to during trials at the incomplete Therapia Lane stop, when one car failed and had to be towed back into the depot by another
