Castle Street, Carlisle
Castle Street at the junction with St Marys Gate.
Castle Street, partly pedestrianised, was formerly the A595 and was also the Newtown route of the City of Carlisle Electric Tramway until its closure in November 1931.
This is the route of The Cumbria Way long distance path from Ulverston to Carlisle, which ends at the nearby Carlisle Cross and Town Hall in the city centre (next photograph Image).

Benchmark, Castle Street Wall
Detail of an Ordnance Survey cut benchmark on the end of a dressed sandstone wall on the south west side of Castle Street. The benchmark marks a height of 24.3331m above Ordnance Datum Newlyn last levelled and verified in 1972 (location photograph Image).
The benchmark is adjacent to The Cumbria Way long distance path.

Department store on the corner of Castle Street (left) and St. Mary's Gate (right). Formerly the family-run Bulloughs, established 1910, it changed hands in 2006.
Information update : Hoopers Carlisle store closed down in 2013.
