The Apple Tree, Lowther Street
One of several pubs in the Carlisle district designed by Harry Redfern, chief architect for the State Management Scheme (government control of alcohol - see h2g2 article http://h2g2.com/approved_entry/A644645 ). The pub was built in 1925 - English Heritage has a detailed description and background history http://www.imagesofengland.org.uk/details/default.aspx?id=469182 .
The name of the pub was changed to 'Pippins' in the 1980s (see Geograph photo, 2008 http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2180420 ), but it reverted to its original name after a renovation in 2013.

The Apple Tree - January 2017
Constructed on the site of a Victorian drinking shop, The Apple Tree was designed by Harry Redfern, built by John Laing & Son (with joinery by J H Reid of Carlisle) and opened in May 1927. One of the finest of the State Management built pubs, it contained living quarters for the manager, a kitchen and a "mixed 1st class room" where couples could congregate. Sold to John Smiths Brewery in May 1973, it was briefly "The Pippin", but has now reverted to its original name. Still trading - and currently decorated for the "Six Nations" rugby tournament.

Carlisle: Lowther Street
Looking north from the junction with Bank Street. Sensibly, the inbound bus lane is separated by a kerb from the main carriageway, which prevents violations by selfish motorists.

Shops in Lowther Street, 2010
Revisiting the scene in September 2018, none of the four businesses was still trading at this location.
From left to right : No 46-48 was Carlisle Toys & Hobbies, now Savers discount store; No 44 was coco bay, now Slater Tanning Studio; No 42A was Hodgsons Newsagents, now Anystyle Barbers; No 42 was Argos, currently empty (one of two Argos stores in Carlisle, this branch relocated to Sainsbury's at Caldewgate in 2018).
