Up until the middle of the 19th century this was the site of the 'Black Hole', described by Marcus Patton "a place of confinement to which the Provost of Bangor could send disturbers of the peace. Its walls were from three to four feet thick, and so strongly built that its demolition required blasting" (from http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bangor-Historical-Gazetteer-Marcus-Patton/dp/090045752X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1217842346&sr=8-1 ). After demolition of the 'Black Hole' this was the site of Bangor Endowed School, built in 1856 - the school is now known as Bangor Grammar School and is located on College Avenue - see

80 Main Street, Bangor
Hated by many local Bangorians, this is a fairly interesting modern construction built 1968-69 by contractors William Dowling Ltd to a design by Shanks & Leighton. It was built for the Allied Irish Bank but is now occupied by a card shop on the ground floor with offices above.
The site was formerly occupied by the Imperial Hotel, built c1880. The picture at http://www.francisfrith.com/search/northern+ireland/county+down/bangor/photos/bangor_40270.htm shows the hotel as the building directly right of the lamp-post.
