Former Taviner's Auction Rooms and Co-op Hall
This building was built in 1931 by Harold E. Todd and A. A. Thompson of 29 Orchard Place, Bristol. The estimated cost of the build was £8000 (£436,231 as of 2023). The art deco building is built of rendered brick with duchess slate at the front and asbestos slate at the back. On the ground floor is a large hall with a stage and retiring rooms. There is also a club with a skittle alley, offices, meeting rooms and a kitchen. There used to be a narrow path called Prewett Place, which was demolished in the early 1930s. Until 1960 this building was used by Sick and Benefit Friendly Society, and as the Redcliffe Adult School. It was then used by the Bristol Co-operative Society Education department until 1966 when it became the Bristol Co-operative Society Political Department, or the Co-operative Hall. In 1973 it became the Redcliffe Social Club and Bristol Trades Council. During this time it was a dance club and the building was known as the Palais. From the 1970s to around 2000 the building was used by Taviner's Auction Rooms.

The bells, silenced
Another old boozer, The Bell, which is now boarded up. It stands on the site of a forge, but this inn (originally the Blue Bell) was built in about 1750 with bow windows - a novel feature in the city's pubs at the time. However, things are not looking so rosy these days.

Former glass cone, Prewett Street, Bristol
The last stunted relic of the glass industry once prevalent in this area. Built c1780 before being cut down to about a quarter of its original height in 1936. Grade II listed.
It has been ingeniously converted to a restaurant, attached to the adjacent hotel.

A bell sounding hollow
The Bell closed some time ago and has fallen into great disrepair. Even the graffiti has been covered with graffiti. Once there were buildings either side of the pub, with Harris's Cottages to the left. Only the Bell survivied into the latter twentieth century, but seems set to follow its neighbours into history.

A silenced bell
The Bell is closed. This particular pub has a long history, dating back to the late eighteenth century but has now served its last pint. It lies in what was a very industrial area back in the day, with glassworks, sail-cloth factories, flax and twine works, a brewhouse among it neighbours, along with later arrivals such as the railways. But the Bell stands on the site of a forge, so perhaps this is what gave it its name.
The pub (once called the Blue Bell for a while) relied largely on trade from the surrounding industries, rather than residential drinkers. However, the area has undergone a pretty far-ranging redevelopment in recent years, with trade falling in line with much of the pub trade. It closed a few years ago, remained derelict and subject to a fire. Plans are being approved for its demolition and the building of housing, despite local calls for it to be retained as a vital part of the local heritage.

A hall due to go
The old hall, built around the post-war period for the Co-operative, has been left to rot. In a past life, it was used by the Ministry of Labour and National Service. The last occupiers are long gone and the arsonists have caused a lot of damage to the rear, especially the roof. With the likelihood of demolition soon the writing is on the wall.
