Gas Ferry Road (North)
Reminds us of when a ferry ran between the adjacent former Gas Works and the south bank of Bristol Harbour, where the road continues as Gas Ferry Road (South) alongside the SS Great Britain car park to Cumberland Road on the Avon New Cut. The old stone rubble walls are subject to a preservation order.

On the lookout
The modern pathway around the old docks includes a rather simple but effective 'lookout post' on the northern bank. Behind are the former coal gas and electricity works (now redeveloped) and beyond is Cabot Tower.

Two types of coke
Once the old gas and light works would have consumed and burned lots of coal and coke. Nowadays the industry is gone and the only coke you'll find is the liquid variety in the restaurants.

Yet more new apartments
The regeneration of the old city docks continues apace. Linden homes are now creating two new additions to the Western Wharf area, with the Boat House and The Purifier House - now available for over a third of a million each! The older building to the left of shot is the old Purifier, one of a number of industrial sites in this area that comprised the Bristol and Clifton Oil Gas Co; it was set up in 1823 to provide for the city of Bristol. For many years this was left an abandoned shell, but has a future now; proposals have been accepted to turn the Grade II listed house into flats, shops and a restaurant. New moorings in Bristol Harbour - opposite SS Great Britain
These moorings have been opened recently to serve the large number of new waterside apartments erected on the northern side of the Harbour. The grey stone structure awaiting development is a Grade II listed building left over from the large Gas Works which occupied the site from the 1870s.

Former Gas Works
Seen from the other side of the Floating Harbour, the gas works are being restored to preserve the buildings and provide a new use as more bars, restaurants and cafés. On the skyline, almost hidden by the trees, is the Cabot Tower.

Cannon's Marsh, Bristol
This area was for long underdeveloped and home to a very derelict gas works. Major developments have crept along the harbour front, one building has been totally refurbished and a little dock inlet has been created. The inlet was full of former lifeboats and steam launches. Sadly we were on the wrong side of the harbour to explore here and ran out of time to take a ferry.
