A20 bridge
This graffiti covered bridge is where the A20 Swanley Bypass crosses the Southeastern main railway line from London (Victoria) to the Medway towns and beyond. The subway is for a footpath that runs alongside the railway here, towards Swanley Station. In the background is Bournewood Quarry. On the far left of the photo, at the top of the cutting bank, can be seen an obelisk-type Coal Tax Post (see Image).

Railway west of Swanley
This is the Southeastern main line from London (Victoria) to the Medway towns and beyond, with First Capital Connect "Thameslink" unit 319 005 on the 11.56 Kentish Town to Sevenoaks service approaching Swanley Station. In the background on the top of the cutting bank can be seen an obelisk-type Coal Tax Post (see Image).

Coal Tax Post no 206
This is Coal Tax Post no 206 on the list linked to below. See Image for context. This particular type of Coal Tax Post, of granite obelisk design, dates from before the 1861 Act - posts of this design were installed on the side of railways, as opposed to the more common pillar design, installed more widely near roads and tracks following the 1861 Act (see Image for an example). This particular example is at a slight angle (the photo is straight). Note the City of London coat of arms on the face.

London coal tax pillar
Whilst the boundary markers by roads and paths were comparatively small cast-iron posts, those by railways were substantial stone obelisks.

On Cherry Avenue, at this point the road from St Mary's Road, splits left and right (both still called Cherry Avenue). Church, also has small charity shop on left of building.

"The Golden Age of Travel" train approaches Swanley, slowly
A pullman dining train charging £250 a head, and remarkably full at that. Departing from Victoria at 11:55, it is due back at 16:25 after meandering around southeast England. It is passing a Coal Tax pillar. The bridge carries a public footpath.
