Railway Quay
Developed in the 1860s when a meander was straightened and filled in though the land remained empty until the 1880s when extensive sidings and port facilities were added. Since the 1960s all of these have disappeared and the quay had gradually become more and more derelict and is still awaiting development. From June this year the Port Authority has begun work to remove all the rotten pilings between the swing bridge and the number two ramp of the ferry terminal. The piles of removed timber can be seen on the quay. Also in the water just visible as the tide gets lower is the remains of the gridiron built in the past for mooring boats to allow work on their hulls in the harbour when the tide dropped sufficiently. The white building is the ferry terminal.

The Carpenter's Shop and Paint Store
Located on Railway Quay and built by the LBSCR when developing Newhaven's port facilities in 1885. It remained in use as part of the neighbouring Marine Workshops until relatively recently but is now boarded up awaiting redevelopment. Plans had been submitted to rejuvenate the quay but these were shelved in May 2012 in favour of another on a green field site nearby. The building is listed.

Newhaven Ferry Terminal
A view of the entrance off Railway Approach. Ferries to Dieppe have been running from Newhaven since the late 18th century though it was the development of the port after the railway arrived in 1847 that services really took hold. The current entrance and terminal is on Railway Quay, built on the site of an old bend of the River Ouse, though the embarkation point is further down on East Quay. Much of the current lorry park was built on the site of the old railway sidings and a couple of buildings still survive from that era, an old shed in the centre and the Marine Workshops to the right. The current terminal building lies further down between the two.
