Horsewheel, Stanmer
Behind Stanmer House, in a C17th wellhouse. The "iron gear wheels and belt transmission date from c1850; the horsewheel was brought from elsewhere and the engine was originally powered by oxen." This is from the listing, some internet sources say it was driven by donkeys. Grade II listed.

Stanmer House
Built between 1722-27 by Nicholas Dubois for the Pelham family on the site of a much older building. A 19th century extension has lost the original symmetry of design. The family retained ownership until 1947 when it passed to Brighton council who now use the house as a museum. Beyond the house is Stanmer Great Wood. The name Stanmer derives from Stony Mere and some of the area's sarsen stones now line the lane exiting the village, two of which are in the foreground.

Stanmer House, Stanmer
An austere but finely-proportioned facade, in Wealden sandstone, the work of Nicholas Dubois, 1722-27, for Henry Pelham, M.P. and later Prime Minister (1743-1754). The right-most bay, which spoils the symmetry, was added in 1860. Grade I listed.

When I visited in the late 1990s the house was boarded up, but it has since been lavishly restored as a venue for conferences, weddings and the like.

Detail of Stanmer House, Stanmer (1)
Ornate Classical details in the former Dining Room of c1760. It has, from the listing, "a frieze of festoons, modillion cornice and ceiling decorated with arabesques and fruit", and a screen of fluted Corinthian columns with gilded capitals. The ceiling plasterwork is somewhat rococo in style. The plasterer was Thomas Clarke.
