Built between 1722-27 by Nicholas Dubois for the Pelham family on the site of a much older building. A 19th century extension has lost the original symmetry of design. The family retained ownership until 1947 when it passed to Brighton council who now use the house as a museum. Beyond the house is Stanmer Great Wood. The name Stanmer derives from Stony Mere and some of the area's sarsen stones now line the lane exiting the village, two of which are in the foreground.
