An austere but finely-proportioned facade, in Wealden sandstone, the work of Nicholas Dubois, 1722-27, for Henry Pelham, M.P. and later Prime Minister (1743-1754). The right-most bay, which spoils the symmetry, was added in 1860. Grade I listed. The reticence of most Georgian exteriors often belies their interiors: Image] and Image When I visited in the late 1990s the house was boarded up, but it has since been lavishly restored as a venue for conferences, weddings and the like.
