Winton: I wonder what these steps were for
A substantial flight of steps, complete with handrail up the middle as well as at each side, currently leads absolutely nowhere. Presumably they once had a purpose but one can only guess now.

Winton: Boot?s
The Winton branch of Boot’s the Chemist is at 358-362 Wimborne Road, on the corner of Leslie Road. This was previously Sainsbury’s until they moved a short distance north in the late 1970s (see Image). We are standing under the canopy of Image supermarket, which was the previous premises of Boot’s. Beyond Boot’s, a glimpse of what the original houses would have looked like, before the shopfronts were added, can be gleaned by looking at the first floors.

Winton: Lidl
This relatively new branch of Lidl, at 376-378 Wimborne Road on the corner of Withermoor Road, was previously a branch of Tesco, which had originally been a home and ware branch but towards the latter end of Tesco's occupancy had sold food as well.

Winton: Woolworth?s
Looking from just up Cardigan Road, back towards the Image, Wimborne Road. Woolworth’s has occupied these premises, 370-374 Wimborne Road, at least since 1975 when they are listed at this address in the Kelly’s Directory. This picture was taken a week or so after the announcement of the company’s being taken into liquidation, just short of their centenary in 2009, and this store is closing soon, the shelves half empty and the remaining stock half price. For a view in the opposite direction, up Cardigan Road from outside the store, see Image

Winton: lights still on at Woolworth?s
It was announced in early December that the famous Woolworth's chain had gone into administration and all their hundreds of branches across the UK were closed by the first week of January 2009. The last day for this one – see Image – was 27 December. Nevertheless, three weeks on it still seems to be generating an electricity bill as the signboard lights defiantly shine on. Meanwhile, a car turns left into Cardigan Road.
