Wells: former Priory Road Post Office
This post office opened on 1 February 1893, called Queen's Cross. It was replaced by the Broad Street office, very nearby, on 1 October 1897 but that latter branch was replaced by Priory Road on 1 December 1902 which thus saw it return to its original premises. The office was a victim of the nationwide cull of 2,500 branches in 2007-08 and finally closed on 8 July 2008. When the signage was removed, paintwork spelling out the original Queen's Cross branch name- see Image

The Priory of St John
This building can trace its history to the thirteenth century at least and has given the street its name. It was a significant establishment with links to Glastonbury Abbey, initially beginning as a hospital for the aged and infirm in the early 1200s under Bishop Jocelyn. By 1350 it was made a priory for a prior, chaplain and ten brethren and the whole site appears to have extended much further than the present structure. However, it came to a close in the Dissolution of 1539. Grade I listed.

Wells: 115-year-old wording on the old post office
Revealed after the post office here closed in 2008 and the signboards were removed, this is a close-up of the paintwork above the door of Image We know it is over 100 years old because Queen's Cross Post Office, which had opened here at 1 Priory Road on 1 February 1893, was replaced on 1 October 1897 by Broad Street Post Office, just behind us at 10 Broad Street. However, the Broad Street branch was also shortlived as it was again replaced by the office, on 1 December 1902, back in these premises whose doorway we are looking at now - only this time the branch was named Priory Road and remained such until its closure in the national cull of 2,500 offices in 2007-08. It closed on 8 July 2008.
