The bow window fronted houses on the left were very popular in the 1930's and probably date from then, particularly as the local postbox was installed in 1936. On the right, behind the railings, is Yardley Cemetery.

Edward VIII postbox, Clay Lane, Yardley, Birmingham
Located near the corner of Clay Lane and Coventry Road, this postbox can be accurately dated to 1936. King Edward VIII only reigned for part of that year and abdicated without having been crowned. This is one of only a tiny number of surviving Edward VIII boxes in the city. It seems to be a slimmer design than the only one in the city centre in Digbeth. No doubt more items are posted there so that required a larger box. Image

Junction of Clay Lane and Coventry Road, Yardley, Birmingham
In the foreground is Clay Lane. Coventry Road is a dual carriageway and traffic from Clay Lane can only turn left here. On the other side of the dual carriageway is Yew Tree Lane. The postbox in Clay Lane is a rare example from the brief reign of King Edward VIII in 1936. See:- Image

Road in Yardley Cemetery and Crematorium, Yardley, Birmingham
This road is used by visitors both on foot and in vehicles. In this direction it is leading to the entrance on Clay Lane, near Coventry Road. The cemetery dates from 1883 with the last extension taking place in 1921. No new graves have been opened since 1962 but cremations still take place in the crematorium.
