East Coast Main Line: North of Welwyn Garden City
This is the view from the B195 Bridge Road bridge, with the local train stabling sidings off to the left. In times gone by the branch line to Luton peeled off to the immediate left, while the branch line to Hertford peeled off some distance ahead to the right.

Welwyn Garden City: Former Great Northern Railway line
The former Great Northern Railway opened their branch between Welwyn Junction and Luton in 1860, long before the development of Welwyn Garden City. The railway was closed in 1965 and this is the trackbed heading around the curve to Welwyn Garden City railway station and the site of the former halt on the branch line.

Under the White Bridge, Welwyn Garden City
The Ayot Greenway officially ends at the White Bridge although the path continues a little further east. There is little sense here that this is near the centre of a town.

Welwyn Garden City: The White Bridge (2)
Looking somewhat less than white from this angle the bridge was built in 1925 to replace the level crossing on Digswell Road, where it crossed the former Great Northern Railway's branch line between Welwyn Junction and Luton. The bridge became necessary as the development of Welwyn Garden City began in the 1920s. The railway had been opened in 1860 and was finally closed in 1965. The far side of the bridge in this view represents the eastern end of the Ayot Greenway.
