Effluent Treatment Plant
The sign at the gate says that this effluent treatment plant is operated by the combination of Rothes distillers, who also operate the dark grains plant in the town. The map shows it as a sewage works, so there seem to be two related processes in operation here.

Stored Machinery
There's a wonderful collection of machinery and equipment in this field just outside Rothes. Some of the houses on the outskirts of the town are in the background, and the tall white building is the dark grains plant, where residues from the local distilleries are processed to make animal feed.

Approaching the net!
The subject fish is a male kelt salmon; this can be determined by the pronounced bend or kype in the lower jaw. After being landed this fish like six other of his pals was today safely returned to the freedom of the River Spey. The "fly" which this kelt has taken is known as a Cascade Shrimp and is highly rated as a successful lure on most rivers.

A Spey ghillie unhooks a salmon kelt on the Rothes Beat.
Just where the Rothes burn enters the River Spey, a ghillie carefully unhooks a salmon kelt prior to returning it to the water. (A kelt is a fish which has taken part in the spawning process and is now on its way to the sea.)

Green Street
Multicoloured modern houses on the street which leads from the main street towards the river. They are originally council houses, but some have been sold and developed by their new owners.

A typical salmon kelt from the Spey.
To an untrained eye this has all the appearances of a fresh salmon but it is not! After spawning the fish appears elongated having been relieved of the spawn and its body fat over the previous months. On entering the fresh water from the sea the fish do not feed until they return to the salt water which only a few manage to do. This fish was returned unharmed a few seconds after the picture was taken.

A salmon angler's point of view on Junction Pool at Rothes.
It's February and the water is fairly cold; still the call of the spring salmon cannot be resisted! With a 15 foot long fly rod in one hand and camera in the other my intention was to show the sport literally from the angler's point of view. Within seconds of this picture being taken a fish did take the fly and if you look at the other pictures in this series you will see the results.

Strike!!! A salmon has taken the fly!
The magic moment in an angler's world. How big is the fish? Is it well hooked? Is it fresh or is it a kelt? Where's the net?
