The inn's name may have been chosen as something easily remembered and ilustrated, for those who could not read, although there is no traditional sign on a bracket or post today.

Old Gate (1), Heathton near Claverley, Shropshire
The building is believed to date from the 16th century, but it was not used as a pub until about 1837, when it became a beer house under the Duke of Wellington's Beer Act of 1830. By 1859 it had become an inn, offering accommodation, a facility it continues to offer today. Originally it was known as the Wicket, then as the Gate or Gate Inn and eventually as the Old Gate or Old Gate Inn.

Victorian wall mounted postbox, Old Gate, Heathton near Claverley, Shropshire
The postbox displays the initials V R for Victoria Regina and is set into one of the exterior walls of the Old Gate Inn. It must date from 1901 or earlier. To see the postbox in location, please see:- Image
