The building is believed to date from the 16th century, but it was not used as a pub until about 1837, when it became a beer house under the Duke of Wellington's Beer Act of 1830. By 1859 it had become an inn, offering accommodation, a facility it continues to offer today. Originally it was known as the Wicket, then as the Gate or Gate Inn and eventually as the Old Gate or Old Gate Inn. Image Image Image
