New houses in Blakenhall Gardens, Wolverhampton
This is a multicultural area of Wolverhampton which has been undergoing very extensive regeneration for several years. The Blakenhall Gardens housing development is now well under way. The nearest semi-detached house is No 18. I don't think the numbering agrees with the plot numbering on the developer's published site map.

New housing in Blakenhall Gardens, Wolverhampton
These new houses are not yet occupied, so this cheeky look over the fence into the back gardens might well be considered an invasion of privacy in a few months time. Turf has been laid in some of the gardens in the last few days. As with all modern developments, not a single chimney is in sight, but solar roof panels are already installed. Update - April 2014: the whole project has been completed - looks very smart, including two excellent Asian supermarkets, and some smaller shops.

Blakenhall Gardens regeneration in Wolverhampton
Progress is rapid in this development, seen from near Chapel Street. House foundations are shown. In the distance is a new red-brick Asian supermarket, already open. The metal framework to its right will become another. Old buildings in Dudley Road are in the distance. The area has long been the best local source of "ethnic" fresh vegetables and spices. Update - April 2014: the whole project has been completed - looks very smart, including two excellent Asian supermarkets, and some smaller shops.

Derelict land at Blakenhall, Wolverhampton
Looking across part of the Blakenhall Gardens regeneration area. The buildings on the right are in Chapel Street, while those straight ahead are in the much newer Blakenhall Gardens shopping precinct by the Dudley Road. The Asian supermarkets there are particularly recommendable, but don't expect Waitrose style spaciousness or spick and span-ness. The trading culture is quite different. The last of six tower blocks at Phoenix Rise nearby is being gradually demolished, and the whole area is to be rebuilt with two and three storey family housing. According to the plans, appropriately sized trees will be planted in the new roadways, and existing mature trees will be retained wherever possible.

Blakenhall Gardens regeneration project, Wolverhampton
This telephoto assisted image from the junction of Chapel Street and Dudley road shows the view across the site to some of the recently built housing. The spire of St Luke's Church can be seen above the semi-detached house on Plot No 61. The foreground is where there was a shopping precinct formerly, including the very useful Johal Supermarket where fresh "ethnic" vegetables and spices could be bought at very reasonable prices. A new retail area is to be built here soon. http://homes.keepmoat.com/developments/the-midlands/blakenhall-gardens/
