The Molineux - Home of Wolverhampton Wanderers
It is hard to believe now but this was the most successful club in the 'English' league (let alone the Midlands) during the 1950's. They even surpassed 'The Villa' & that is hard to believe. They almost got the league & cup double but were pipped to the post by Burnley. Strangely both clubs are the new boys in the Premiership for the 2009/10 season - I won't tell you who the other bunch are. Will they stay up? I hope so.

Statue of Billy Wright, Molineux Stadium, Wolverhampton
Billy Wright played made his debut as a Wolverhampton Wanderers first team player in 1939 at the age of fifteen, though because of the onset of World War II, many regular players had already been called up, so his official debut was in 1946 in an FA Cup tie against Lovells Athletic ..... (who?) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lovells_Athletic_F.C. He became club captain following Stan Cullis's retirement in 1948 and played until 1959, years during which Wolves had their most successful period. He played for England 105 times, and was captain for ninety of them. He managed Arsenal for a while, and married Joy Beverley (of the popular singing trio of Beverley Sisters). He died in 1994 aged seventy. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billy_Wright_%28footballer%29
The bronze statue is by James Walter Butler, MBE RA, and was placed on the west side of Molineux Stadium in 1996. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Butler_%28artist%29
