The Winning Post, formerly the New Pope Iron Inn (2) - sign, 6 Pope Iron Road, Barbourne, Worcester
A pub for at least 122 years (so far), for most of its life it was known as either the New Pope Iron Inn or the Pope Iron Inn. The name was derived from the unusual road name but the origins of this are unknown. The current name of the Winning Post reflects the fact that the pub is fairly near to the famous Worcester Racecourse. Image

The Winning Post, formerly the New Pope Iron Inn (1), 6 Pope Iron Road, Barbourne, Worcester
A back street pub which has been a pub since at least 1891. It appears under the name of the New Pope Iron Inn in the census of that year. It has been known either under that name or as the Pope Iron Inn until quite recently. Today it is known as the Winning Post and proclaims itself as an Irish pub. The road itself is mixed use with mainly houses on this side, but on the other side there are a large number of industrial and commercial units, as well as some residential accommodation. Image

The Pump house Environment Centre, Barbourne
The former waterworks building now an environment centre. The architecture is fine and these buildings undoubtedly once held steam pumps although the chimney is long gone. A visit when open is a priority for the next few weeks. The grounds contain a small horizntal duplex non-rotative steam pump.

The Pump House Environment Centre, Barbourne, Worcester
The former waterworks building now an environment centre. The architecture is fine and these buildings once held steam pumps although the chimney is long gone. The grounds contain a small horizontal duplex non-rotative steam pump. The waterworks was a Thomas Hawksley design and was built in at least two phases in 1857 and 1868. Apparently the engines were removed in 1895 and electric pumps installed. That was a very early installation and steam pumps were to be installed in UK waterworks until the 1930s. The site closed in 1995 and the Environment Centre was opened in 2004.
