Built in 1869 for the 7th Corps Cheshire Rifle Volunteers. From 1880 base for F and G Company 2nd (Earl of Chester's) Volunteer Battalion Cheshire Regiment and from 1908 base for G Company 5th Battalion Cheshire Regiment with Territorial Force motto 'Defence not Defiance' as shown above door. Defence not Defiance
Motto of the post 1908 Territorial Forces on the former drill hall in Greenway Road. This inscription was made above the doorway of the 1869 building after the new force was formed. The drill hall was base for G Company 5th Battalion Cheshire Regiment.
