Metal plate attached to concrete post by the B5156, in parish of Stockton Heath (Warrington District), Ellesmere Road, Lower Walton, North East of No. 102 against fence, on North side of bend in road. Ellesmere Road from Chester Road
In the days when the Ship Canal was busy, this was an "escape route" to avoid delays at the swing bridge just around the bend on Chester Road. You had to be very lucky for the trick to work: first to get around the inevitable queue of trucks on Chester Road and second to be able to access or cross the A49 at the next swing bridge!
