In the days when the Ship Canal was busy, this was an "escape route" to avoid delays at the swing bridge just around the bend on Chester Road. You had to be very lucky for the trick to work: first to get around the inevitable queue of trucks on Chester Road and second to be able to access or cross the A49 at the next swing bridge!
