Latchford locks with ship descending 1979
A vessel has been tugged into the larger of the locks at Latchford. Note the low derricks on deck, to permit the ship to conform to the loading gauge of the Manchester Ship Canal.

Bradshaw Lane
The railway from Altrincham crossed the road here on a high embankment and bridge. Height had to be gained to cross the Manchester Ship Canal at Latchford Viaduct. The railway closed in 1985, hastened by the cost of maintaining the viaduct.

The Trans Pennine Trail leaves the railway
With Latchford Viaduct out of action - the probable cause of the line's closure in 1985 along with the ideological stupidity of the government of the time, the path descends to the suburban road network of Warrington.

Latchford Locks, Manchester Ship Canal
Taken from the footway across the sluice weir. There is a significant flow of water in the canal which is fed from the rivers Mersey and Irwell, and the sluices are automatically adjusted to suit the current volume of water. When the Canal was still busy, the operation of the locks would probably have been sufficient to provide most of the passage of water.
