Once a car park
Hard to believe now but, decades ago, the site of these up-market apartments was a semi-derelict car park serving Altrincham Station, before the creation of the Metrolink tram system. Cars were parked on waste land cleared from the old railway sidings which used to be here. In the 19th century, the Manchester/Altrincham line extended over this land to the then terminus station which was originally nearby, but a little further southwards, and called Altrincham & Bowdon.

Train to Chester
The class 156 diesel unit is seen here pulling away from Altrincham with a Chester train. The houses to the right have been built on the line of the former sidings south of the station.

The Chester diesel train leaves Altrincham
... beneath Moss Lane bridge. To the right is the walkway to nearby Tesco's supermarket; to the left, above the bridge, can be seen what were, for many years, the Council Offices; the two left hand arches used to accommodate an extension of tracks from the Altrincham/Manchester electric train service (subsequently replaced by Metrolink); behind the trees were railway sidings, which, in turn, became a car park and then private, landscaped apartments.

G W Bonson's heated store rooms
The "ghost sign" on the end of this building on Moss Lane gives its original use. The upper floors now seem to include a tanning studio - bodies rather than goods being heated. The ground floor is the Cancer Research shop.

Moss Lane, Altrincham
Seen from near the junction with Stamford New Road. Moss Lane was made one way for traffic management reasons, and to enable the pavement to be widened across the bridge that carries it over the railway line immediately south of Altrincham station.

Stamford House, Altrincham - rear
The building, originally called Station Buildings, comprises offices and shops. Built 1904-5, by Charles Heathcote & Sons, it is now listed grade 2 (list entry 1084311). This is the rear view from Moss Lane. See Image for the front. Note the railway bridge now restricted to one lane of traffic westbound with a contraflow cycle lane.

Road closed, Altrincham
A large stretch of Stamford New Road is closed, while work is undertaken to implement a new street layout, including the widening of footpaths, decluttering of existing furniture and planting of new trees. It is part of a £6m programme of improvements to public realm space in Altrincham town centre.
