Common Road, the A572, with Wharf Road to the left
The 'wharf' referred to was at Newton Common Lock on the Sankey Canal. In the dip of the road in this view the canal was crossed by a swing bridge. This was replaced by a stone bridge in 1935.

Penkford Canal Bridge
Penkford Bridge which carries the A572 road from St Helens to Newton-le-Willows over the Sankey Canal. Originally, this would have been a swing bridge to accommodate the Mersey Flats sailboats which used the canal when it was first built. After this section of the canal became disused in the 1920s and 30s and the swingbridges were replaced by fixed bridges such as this one.

Sankey St.Helens Canal (disused)
This is a small section of the Sankey St.Helens Canal and forms part of Sankey Valley Park. This particular section of water is only around 150 metres long and just clips the bottom left hand corner of this grid square. It is well stocked with coarse fish and Newton Anglers have rights.
