Regent's Canal in Maida Vale (2)
This is the south-western portal of the 272 yard or 251 metre long Maida Hill Tunnel, which takes the canal under Edgware Road. This was one of the first structures to be built on the canal, with work commencing in 1812. A spring was struck during the construction and there were numerous other delays before it was completed in 1816. The glass fronted building over the tunnel portal is the Café Laville, which was built in the 1970s despite much local opposition, but today offers diners a wonderful view down the canal towards Little Venice.
