Lower Road, Higher Denham
A lot of thought went into naming the streets in the small community of Higher Denham on its hillside site. Upper, Middle and Lower roads follow the contours of the valley side, while just a short way behind me here the steeper Side Road follows the slope.

Denham Golf Club Station
This unmanned station on the Chiltern Line serves several residential roads within the immediate vicinity and takes its name from the golf club just a few hundred metres to the north east.

River Misbourne Higher Denham
View upstream near a minor road bridge crossing to a part of the Misbourne where the gardens of bank-side properties extend to the river edge, creating an unusual river corridor for this chalk stream. This part of the Misbourne is below the discharge point of Gerrards Cross sewage treatment works - which prevented the river drying out downstream during a period of acute low flows in late summer of 1997.

Passenger shelter at Denham Golf Club station
You couldn't call this a waiting-room - just four thin walls and a roof, unlit and without a door. But for me it was quite a startling find, as the 'pagoda' roof marks it out as a relic of the old Great Western Railway. This one probably dates from 1912, when the Golf Club station first opened. Pagoda shelters were once a common sight at smaller GWR stations. I found the following picture (taken at Quakers Yard, perhaps in the 1950's) on Alan George's 'Old Merthyr Tydfil' website: http://www.alangeorge.co.uk/Images_Q-T/QuakersYard_LowLevelStation.jpg How far back in its history the GWR adopted the 'pagoda' style isn't clear. I suspect it was very early on - 'chinoiserie' had rather gone out of fashion by the second half of the 19th century.
