Flooding at Ham riverside
Several acres of Ham Lands were under water on this day in mid-October, 2012. There had been a lot of rain in the previous few days, and it wasn't clear to me whether the flooding was directly due to the rainfall, or - more likely, I suspect - a recent high spring tide.

Scolytus beetle damage in a dead elm, Ham Lands (1)
There are many elms along this stretch of the Thames towpath, many of them dead, while those still alive are in poor condition. The photo shows the 'galleries' excavated by the vector of Dutch Elm Disease - the beetle Scolytus scolytus. It is said that the central furrow is cut by the adult female, the side galleries by the feeding larvae. The tree - what is left of it - stands in the narrow margin of land between the river and the towpath. For another view see http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3358902
