Railway Footbridge and Car Park
This is the site of what used to be Carn Brea Station, an important stop on the West Cornwall Railway. The station was closed in 1967.

Site of Carn Brea Station
View eastwards, towards Truro and Plymouth; Great Western Plymouth - Penzance main line. The station closed to passengers on 2/1/61, but remained for goods until 1/5/67. (There was little to show on a wet day 20 years later).

Part of the Diaspora Garden at Heartlands
The Diaspora Garden commemorates the emigration of Cornish miners to distant lands to carry out hard rock mining for which their skill was renowned. Different parts of the garden reflect the vegetation of the different parts of the world to which they travelled, such as New Zealand, South Africa, etc.

Heartlands - Diaspora Gardens and new houses
Heartlands is a regeneration project on the old South Crofty mine site and includes a preserved Cornish engine at Robinson's Shaft. The gardens are in sections that relate to parts of the World where Cornish mining technology and miners were exported. It was once said that at the bottom of a hole in the ground anywhere in the world you would find a Cornishman (likewise it was said you would find a Scot at the bottom of a marine engine room ladder - hence Scotty on Star Trek).

Heartlands Project - Robinsons Shaft pumping engine
Built in 1854 at the Copperhouse Foundry, Hayle, used on three sites and gave 101 years of service. The cylinder is 80" bore. This is the massive beam with half of it projecting through the end wall to drive the pumps in the shaft. The engine has been preserved but inaccessible for many years but is now being prepared for a return to hydraulic operation. In 2012 there are two free guided tours of the engine per day and these must be booked on arrival. The tour was very rushed and I only grabbed a few photographs of the engine.

South Crofty Mine - Robinson's Cornish beam engine
Owned by the National Trust and currently (2011) being renovated for eventual public display.
Built in 1854 at the Copperhouse Foundry, Hayle, used on three sites and gave 100 years of service. The cylinder is 80" bore. This shows the cylinder head with the steam and equilibrium valves on opposite sides - a feature championed by the engine's desigher Samuel Grose.

Heartlands Project - Robinson's Shaft Cornish beam engine
The middle chamber of the 1854 built 80" Cornish beam pumping engine. The steam and equilibrium valves are swathed in plastic. It is intended to return this engine to motion by means of hydraulic power.
