Porthleven Institute
The Bickford-Smith Scientific and Literary Institute in Porthleven with its famous clock tower. The building is currently the subject of a National Lottery partially funded restoration project. The plans were approved by the town residents in May 2019 and include the creation of a digital heritage centre.

The Bickford-Smith Institute Building , Porthleven
The building dates from 1882 and stands next to the pier and harbour entrance. With a tower about 70 feet (20 metres) high, it looks like a church but was built as a scientific and literary institute including a lending and reference library. William Bickford-Smith (1827 -1899) was an English fuse manufacturer and a Liberal and Liberal Unionist politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1885 to 1892.

Part of Porthleven Harbour
The tower belongs to the Bickford-Smith Institute, which houses the local council offices, and a snooker hall. There was me thinking it was a church where the wives of fishermen went daily to pray for their safe return. Cornwall is a real place not just a romanticised tourist idyll.

Porthleven - The Bickford Smith Institute
The Bickford Smith Institute was built 1883-4 at the town end of Porthleven's pier. It incorporates a library and a conspicuous clock tower.

Guy Penrose Gibson VC - Porthleven
The memorial to Guy Penrose Gibson is situated on the wall of the Bickford-Smith Institute overlooking the sea in Porthleven. He is noted for his important connection with the Dambuster raids on the dams of the Ruhr in Germany in 1943 being the first commanding officer of RAF No 617 Squadron.
Guy Penrose Gibson was born in India in 1918 but his mother Leonora Mary, nee Strike, originated from Porthleven. His parents separated when he and his siblings were still young and his mother returned to Britain with them. He married in 1940 Evelyn Moore "the Penarth actress" who appeared in several productions with the BBC.
Guy Penrose Gibson was killed in 1944 and is buried in the Netherlands.
