The memorial to Guy Penrose Gibson is situated on the wall of the Bickford-Smith Institute overlooking the sea in Porthleven. He is noted for his important connection with the Dambuster raids on the dams of the Ruhr in Germany in 1943 being the first commanding officer of RAF No 617 Squadron. Guy Penrose Gibson was born in India in 1918 but his mother Leonora Mary, nee Strike, originated from Porthleven. His parents separated when he and his siblings were still young and his mother returned to Britain with them. He married in 1940 Evelyn Moore "the Penarth actress" who appeared in several productions with the BBC. Guy Penrose Gibson was killed in 1944 and is buried in the Netherlands.
