Uckfield Station
The end of the line. The old railway line extended over the road but now the buffers mark the end of this popular improved line to London.

Uckfield: former station
A diesel-electric unit has terminated here: beyond this point, disused track bed stretches towards Lewes and Brighton. The station here has since disappeared, see Image, to save motorists a few seconds' wait at a level crossing, to be replaced by a bus shelter on the eastern side of the road. There has been much talk of re-opening the line from Uckfield to Lewes, which would be an eminently sensible move, (it would provide a second route from London to Brighton, as well as being very useful for local people), but of course, this being Britain, nothing gets done.

Uckfield: Former Station (4)
1310 waits in the London Platform with a service for Victoria via Hever. Uckfield station was moved to the other side of the road (behind me) in 1991. The station buildings were subsequently demolished - see Image for more info.

Uckfield railway station (site), East Sussex
Opened in 1858 on the London Brighton & South Coast Railway line from East Croydon to Lewes via Oxted, this station closed in 1991 when it was replaced by a more utilitarian structure behind the camera position. View south west towards Isfield and Lewes along the former southbound platform. The stump of an old platform light appears to remain in the centre of the image.

Waiting for the Ghost Train
The platforms of the original Uckfield station are still in place but are used only by the local wildlife. The station survived the axing of the line from here to Lewes in 1969 having survived Beeching but falling prey to Lewes' need to build a ring road around the town through railway land until 1991 when the irritation of having the station on the western side of a level crossing on the High Street forced British Rail to construct another on the eastern side. The buildings survived but were demolished in 2000 after an arson attack made them unsafe. The future of the site is still in limbo depending on how successful the campaign to resurrect the line from Uckfield to Lewes is. The council wish to build a car park on the site and if they succeed will end any hope of this.
