This 19th century stuccoed house, with a later ground floor conversion to takeaway restaurant has been the Wan Loi for at least 45 years, certainly since the days when I was at school nearby. Newport is an elegant and varied, historic town. The church seems to be the historic hub.

This bench mark, on the buttress at the north-west corner of the church tower, was estabished in 1858 during the First primary levelling, England & Wales, and was levelled with a height of 242.2690 feet [73.8436 metres] above mean sea level (Liverpool datum). It was included on the Llandysilio to Stafford levelling line. The surveyor's description was No. 87. Bolt in North-west angle of Newport Church tower ; 1.51 ft. above surface (p588).

This OS Bolt can be found on the south face of the church. It marks a point 73.680m above mean sea level.

The church is on an "island" between the High Street and St Mary's Street

Another rather nondescript 18th century brick frontage, this time obscuring the fact that the core of the building includes a late 16th or early 17th century timber-framed house, partially visible at the rear of the structure. It retains a number of original feature such as an inglenook fireplace (albeit bricked-in) at the rear.
