West Mercia Police - Newport Neighbourhood

West Mercia Police Information

West Mercia is the fourth largest geographic police area in England and Wales. The force area is divided into five territorial policing areas, which match the boundaries of our local authorities.

While West Mercia is predominantly rural, it also contains some densely populated urban areas and many market towns. To ensure we strike the right balance between addressing national and local policing priorities, the force focuses its activities on three priority areas:

  • Serving
  • Protecting the public
  • Making the difference

Neighbourhood Officer Details

+
Gary Wade (Inspector)

Following an early career in licensing I joined West Mercia Police in 1990 immediately being posted to Wellington Police Station.

Within a short time I joined the Telford Armed Response Teams where I worked for the next 12 years prior to promotion to Shift Sergeant and a 4 year period within Telford Custody Unit.

In 2008 I joined the Force Professional Standards Department where I worked within the Misconduct arena for 5 years before returning permanently to Telford on promotion to Inspector in 2014 within the Telford Safer Neighbourhoods Team West.

+
Lee Thomas (Police Constable)

Lee has policed the Telford area as a Patrol Response Officer since 2004, the vast majority of this time working in the Donnington and Newport areas.

In January 2015 Lee took over the post of Safer Neighbourhood Officer for the Newport area which includes not only the main town, but also the outlying villages and vast rural area including Lilleshall, Church Aston, Edgmond, Tibberton, Sambrook, Howle and Preston on the Weald Moors and also the campus site of Harper Adams University.

Since taking over the role Lee has been instrumental in introducing the Mobile Police Station service to both Newport town and the villages, increasing the police visibility especially in the outlying areas and providing a personal point of contact service to those areas which never previously had a permanent police post.

Lee is working with local schools and residents to address the long-standing issue of parking problems throughout the town and alongside the PCSO team and local publicans introduced a highly successful Newport wide Pubwatch scheme, designed to further enhance the safety and enjoyment of visitors to the town's nighttime economy.

PCSO Jack Beddall Joined West Mercia Police in October 2018, initially working in the Winyates and Matchborough areas of Redditch but as of March 2019 moved to join the team at Newport. Jack is very approachable and if you see him out and about, feel free to say hello and raise any concerns.

+
Neil Clayton (Sergeant)

My name is PC Clayton and I am currently the Safer Neighbourhood team Police Officer for Brookside. I have worked the South Telford area for 13 years in my role as a response officer. I joined the SNT team in July 2015.

I look forward to continue meeting members of the community whilst out on foot patrol and when on the police bicycle. I understand that Brookside has a strong community spirit and has undergone recent redevelopment. There is an excellent Community Centre that is run by Big Local. I am passionate about doing the right thing for the community and have a desire to keep this area as safe as possible.
