Into the furnace - April 2011
The centre of Ilminster on what has so far (today is the 23rd June) been the hottest day of the year so far for me. It was roasting, the effect being all the stronger for having been above 200m nearly all day crossing the plateau from Sidmouth. It was before Easter.

Guidepost at the Market House
Directions to local towns and villages, plus a hint of the military history of the town. The Duke of Monmouth raised a force to claim the crown from James, Duke of York. His troops entered Ilminster on 17 July, 1685, on his way to a final defeat at Sedgemoor. Covid warnings are a modern touch.

The Market House
Ilminster's historic and geographic heart is based around the large space at the road junctions and the Market House. The stone structure is open plan but covered, where the business of the markets was conducted. It was rebuilt in around 1813, but also attended to in 1982 and in 2009, thanks to local council grants. Grade II listed, excepting the festive decorations.
There is also a fading benchmark on the sunlit near corner - see
