The Bell (1), Old Wenlock Road, Cross Houses near Shrewsbury
There are two villages in Shropshire called Cross Houses. This is the one near Shrewsbury. With the closure of the Fox Inn some years ago, the Bell is its last surviving public house. It is on the A458 road. The pub used to be owned by the Shrewsbury & Wem Brewery Co Ltd of Wem, Shropshire but is now owned by Admiral Taverns, which was sold to a US private equity firm early this year. Image Image

The Bell (3) - sign, Old Wenlock Road, Cross Houses near Shrewsbury
This sign is on a post at the edge of the car park. The Bell is a common name for a public house or inn and reflects the close association that the church had with inns and taverns in the past and particularly in medieval times. Many religious establishments brewed church ales which were sold to increase income. The sound of the church bell was heard far and wide, particularly in the days before the noise of motor traffic etc. Frequently the pub would be located very near to the church. Quite often the pub name includes a number such as The Five Bells, to reflect the number of bells present in the church. Image Image

The end of Ridout Road... for now
New homes, part of the 'Berrington Meadows' development by Fletcher Homes. These houses were completed in 2018 - 2019. At the end of the road is a fence, where the developer said there would be a hedge. The field beyond is agricultural - for now. It is owned by Banbury Developments, the parent of Fletcher Homes, and the road layout is clearly with a view to extending in the future.
