The Corbet Arms (2) - sign, Church Road, Uffington, Shropshire
The sign is on top of a post at the edge of the car park. The Corbet family were believed to be descended from a Norman, Corbet le Normand (Corbet the Northman). They seem to have settled in Shropshire following the Norman Conquest. The name Corbet means the raven, and not surprisingly this forms a major part of the coat of arms.

The Corbet Arms pub in Uffington with its riverside beer garden
It used to be a bowling green, so I am told, but apparently the pub objected to the retired and elderly bowlers bringing their own sandwiches to bowls matches and practices and this rankled into the pub banning the bowlers from doing so. The bowlers left as the relationship broke down. The pub then converted the bowling green into these impressive facilities, possibly the largest riverside beer garden in the county.
Bit of a shame if true.
The pub wasn't the friendliest I must say. I got the sort of welcome from the bar man that I would have expected if I had walked into his living room. A tad surprised initially, then a tad interrogatory, then a tad offish and lastly a tad dismissive. Maybe that comes from the top?
