The Powis Arms public house at Pool Quay
If you're looking for a good honest Free House pub you can hardly do better than this place; the landlord and landlady's hospitality is on an unbelievably generous scale, there's good beer, good company and the landlady's homemade Chilli left my lips buzzing for a few hours afterwards, it was truly great. Plus they let dishevelled, unshaven, hairy walkers camp on their front lawn, provide hot showers free of charge and let me re-charge my mobile phone, also free. All I did was arrive unannounced, eat their food, drink their refreshments, dirty their towels, consume quantities of their hot water, pay a few quid and leave very early the next morning.

Swans and cygnets sleep on the Montgomery Canal near Pool Quay
I've never seen this before; two adult swans with seven grey cygnets asleep on the canal. Only one adult watched me pass with one beady eye while his family safely slumbered.

Deep in the country, walking beside the canal really lets you get away.

Sign of the season (2)
It's breeding time for the sheep. These sheep have been served by a tup (male sheep) wearing a harness with a coloured crayon attached. The oestrus cycle of a ewe is 17 days so if the colour of the crayon is changed every 21 days the farmer is able to judge, within 21 days, when the ewe will lamb. This helps with feeding, and if the lambing is supervised, when it may occur. Any ewe that has several colours indicating repeating return to oestrus probably has some problem which is preventing her getting pregnant. See more info here Image
