The second of a pair of former canal warehouses, dating from probably the early 19th century, which were Grade II listed https://britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/300008133-10-lower-canal-road-powys-newtown-and-llanllwchaiarn#.YuIufXbMI2w in 1988. This (and its twin Image) now form the local convenience store, but once were connected to the now infilled former canal basin to the rear.

Although the whole place has been completely redeveloped since the infilling and closure of this end of the canal and is now a builders' merchant yard, the site here was once a busy canal basin. Historic Wales/Coflein records https://coflein.gov.uk/en/site/34591/ that it consisted of a large dock, surrounded by 7 'arms' of canal, each capable of holding 2 boats for loading or unloading, and served the tweed & flannel weaving businesses of the town, plus a significant number of nearby limekilns. All trace of those seems to have been removed as far as I could tell, apart from one house called The Limekilns.

This late Georgian house is a bit of an odd survivor in this part of Newtown. Older maps from the turn of the 19th century show that it was apparently incorporated into the Lower Canal Road frontage of the large Cambrian Mill complex, a former woollen/flannel/tweed factory which occupied much of the site to the immediate southwest of here between the mid 1850s and 1912 when it was destroyed by fire. Perhaps it was a manager's house of some sort? Since the demolition of the rest of the mill buildings, it is now surrounded by newer developments in most directions, and was Grade II listed https://britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/300008127-cambrian-house-newtown-and-llanllwchaiarn#.Yxt09HbMLIV in 1988, presumably in an attempt to ensure its character was not entirely lost. It must be said at present, it does look a little sorry for itself, especially on the northern gable (at the far end of this photo) which can only really be described as 'ragged'.
