The South Circular road, during lock-down
Photo taken at about 18.50 on a Sunday evening early in the Covid-19 lock-down period. I wouldn't normally allow my shadow to intrude on the scene, but in this instance it is the only human presence.
During the early evening the area did seem eerily deserted, even though morning traffic had been 'within the normal range of variation'. Few people were out on foot, probably outnumbered by cyclists.
Weather conditions weren't as pleasant as the picture might suggest - maximum temperature was 6C, with a bitter, gusty north wind.

Strolling home: the South Circular Road on the morning of the first Olympic road race
A shot taken a few minutes after the men's road race had passed through on its way to the Boxhill circuit. This stretch of Upper Richmond Road (between Priory Lane/Vine Road and Priest's Bridge) was not part of the Olympic course, but was included in the closures which lasted for much of the weekend.
The timing of the event - on the morning after the opening ceremony - along with the fine weather, brought local people out in their thousands. Here we are, heading home, and making the most of a rare opportunity to amble right down the middle of the South Circular.
The race came back some five hours later, drawing - if anything - even larger crowds.

Upper Richmond Road West, SW14
This stretch of the road runs pretty much east-west. Less than a fortnight before the autumnal equinox the sun sets just a few degrees north of due west, lighting up the whole street on a near-cloudless evening.
