Newcastle-under-Lyme: Unitarian church
Viewed from the precincts of St Giles’ church. The sign on the wall facing the churchyard states: THE OLD MEETING HOUSE c1650 rebuilt 1717. The original building was in fact burned down by rioters in 1715.

Unitarian Meeting House
A frontal view of Image The original building dates from the 18th century with renovation carried out in the 19th century and the upper storey added in the 20th century. The stonework on the right hides the steps to St Giles' Church from Lower Street. The blue plaques on the front of the Meeting House show that the master potter Josiah Wedgwood (Image) and the scientist and theologian Joseph Priestley (Image) were amongst the worshippers here.

Unitarian Meeting House, Newcastle Under Lyme
Newcastle-under-Lyme Meeting House was built in 1717 and is built on the site of an earlier building, built around 1685, which was destroyed by a fire in 1715. In 1717 it would have be surrounded by terraced houses until the by-pass was built in the 1960s.

The Unitarian Old Meeting House
Built in 1650 with a major renovation in 1717 and the upper storey added in 1926, very little remains of the original meeting house located at the corner of the churchyard of St Giles' Church. See also Image for another view.

Blue plaque (1)
This is one of two blue plaques fixed to the front of the Image(see also Image). Josiah Wedgwood was probably one of the best known potters to work in Stoke-on-Trent, his "Wedgwood Blue" china is known and collected around the world.

Blue plaque (2)
This is the second of two blue plaques fastened to the front of Image (see also Image). Although the plaque credits Priestley with the discovery of oxygen there are, however, two other scientists who also lay claim to the discovery. Notwithstanding this Joseph Priestley was a respected scientist, historian and theologian.

St Giles Church & the Unitarian Meeting House
These two listed building stand side by side off the busy A34. The photo was taken from the Lidl Supermarket car park. Bird spotters will often see a peregrine falcon perched on the top of St Giles' tower.
