Caldon Canal and college near Shelton, Stoke-on-Trent
The canal passes by the Cauldon Campus of the Stoke-on-Trent College. The wharf at Planet Lock is just out of sight round the canal bend to the right. (Taken with telephoto assistance, hence some foreshortening; the college is more than two hundred metres away.)

By the Caldon Canal at Shelton, Stoke-on-Trent
This is the scene looking east-north-east from Planet Lock. The new building off to the left is the Shelton Primary Trust medical centre. Beyond its car park, the former industrial land by the Caldon Canal was cleared some years ago, but regeneration building has been slow, no doubt due to the turbulent financial climate since 2008. A local observer in Norfolk Street (to the left of the derelict buildings) said they should have been demolished ten years ago. Image]

Planet Lock east of Etruria, Stoke-on-Trent
Lock No 3 on the Caldon Canal. It is not a deep lock, allowing a rise of just 3ft 10in (almost 1·2 metres). This lock is not from the 1770s, but was added to the canal in order to counteract the problem of subsidence nearby in the Etruria area. Can anyone provide a date for this work? On the left is the recently built medical centre.

Weir and sluice above Planet Lock, Caldon Canal
The weir is dry, perhaps because the sluice is raised slightly.
