Disused factory, Barngate Street, Leek
The former Slimma clothing factory has been empty for several years. There is a notice on the building which says that an application to demolish it in August/September 2013 has been submitted. There is also a planning application to build houses on the site.

Slimma Clothing Factory, Leek
Slimma clothing factory at the junction of Waterloo Street and Barngate Street. The factory appears to have just closed due to relocation. The company address is given round the corner as Barngate Street. The chimney is quite distinguished with a square pedestal and an oversailer. Waterloo Mills opposite are now converted to flats and are architecturally very distinguished. This type of single storey works is much more likely to be swept away and is anyway a lot less aesthetically pleasing.
I wrote the above in 2007 and the works was indeed swept away and replaced with housing.

Barngate Street, Leek
On the left is the now demolished Slimma clothing factory. In the background with the copper topped hotel de ville tower is Waterloo Mill. There's a touch of Lancashire about this red brick mill with fairly generous fenestration and a copper clad top to the stair tower. A picture in a book on Leek mills shows it with a splendid chimney. Now converted to desirable apartments but without loss of all its character. This corner is packed with mill workers' terraced housing. The effect is spoilt by motor vehicles crammed in every conceivable corner.

Barngate Street, Leek
Terrace housing west of the town centre. The four-storey building on the left, where Barngate Street intersects with Waterloo Street, is Waterloo Mill, which was converted a few years ago into flats. The closer building on the left, in shadow, is the Slimma clothing factory, now disused.
