Former school in Leighton Avenue, Leigh-on-Sea
From before World War II until around 1960 this building on the corner of Leighton Avenue (left) and Pall Mall (right) housed Caedmon House School which I attended between 1949-54. Progressive, even by the standards of those times, it was not; but it produced generations of pupils who by the time they were ten had reached high standards of literacy and numeracy. After the school closed the building went through many uses and is today divided into flats.

Dundonald Drive, Leigh-on-Sea
Taken just north of the junction with Leigh Road looking north-west. Dundonald Drive is typical of the dense infill of small houses that were built in the decades before and after the First World War in this part of Leigh-on-Sea.

Moose International, Southend 29
A friendly society with charitable aims, principally in the USA, that appears to be fading away in this area. Southend 29 is the only one left in their Eastern group 12. In 2014 and 2015 Swanley, Grays, Corringham and Brentwood closed.

Old painted wall on former bakers, London Road
The last tenants of the shop were also bakers. They have their sign on the opposite side of the building, where, being on a street corner, it is much more prominent. See
Image . This sign is rather tucked away - the next shop along was built later, there is a big gap on a 1920s map.

Former bakers, London Road, Leigh-on-Sea
'Gilberts Bakery Specialists' have vacated the premises, apparently, which has now been re-let. The rear part is at least partly 'Tax Help Direct'. On the other side of the building is another, older, painted inscription for 'Devonshire Bakery' indicating that teas and light refreshments were once served - see

Motor Mania?
Along this stretch of the A13 there are more independent used car dealers than you can shake a stick at. You can find anything from a Bentley to a banger. For some reason all the main dealerships in the Southend area seem to gravitate to the A127.
